Dealing With ADD or ADHD in College

College is a big step in anyone's life, but for those with ADD or ADHD, it can be an even bigger struggle than it is for the person without ADD. College requires you to work diligently on your work so that you are able to complete all of the assignments and thoroughly learn the material so that you can get a good grade in the course. If you have trouble doing this, college can be a real challenge. I would like to share with you some of the tips that I used while in college to control my ADD and get my work finished.

Plan Plan Plan - I think the most important thing that you could do is to plan. At the beginning of the semester, make a list of what is due in all of your classes for each week of the semester. Then add in milestones that you will need to reach to reach your due dates, such as studying a particular chapter or writing the first draft of your paper. Then plan out each week with what you are going to do each day to reach you needed milestones of the week.

Eat well - Your mind needs fuel in order to concentrate effectively. It is very important that you eat good nutritious food and not live on soda and junk food. If you have access to a servery or school cafeteria, use it. They will make good food for you so you don't have think about it.

Get Some Sleep - Despite the fact that it is really fun to stay up all of the time, either getting some extra hours of studying or just having some fun, be sure that you get a decent amount of sleep. Your ADD will be much worse if you must function of too little sleep, which causes those extra hours of study to actually decrease to total hours of concentrated study.

Remember why you are there - When you are pushing hard to try to finish up for a paper in a class that you are not even that interested in, it is easy to lose track of why you are there. But remember that college will have a positive effect on your life long after you graduate. It will help you get a good job and reach your goals in life. Keeping this in mind will help keep you motivated and the motivation will help you focus.

I hope these tips can help you focus and succeed in college with ADD. With diligent effort, even someone with the worst ADD can be successful and graduate with high marks.
